The Big Idea for my project I chose is - Work and Play. I will be evaluating the relationship between work and play and how creativity changes when tied to expectations vs creating for enjoyment. I will be doing this project on my own as I am not in a permanent position for teaching yet. I will complete this project and inform you all on how it goes.
I feel like a lot of adults turn their hobbies into "work" nowadays. We are constantly trying to monetize everything we do. Adults are not allowing themselves the time and freedom to just play. What does that look like? What does art look like when it is work? What can we create when we allow ourselves to "play"?
While looking around for ideas on what I would want to do for my project, I found another blog post that resonated well. The Importance of Play In Art-Making This post, The Importance of Play in Art Making, (Sibley, 2021), talked about how it is important to play - “anything we do simply for the joy of doing rather than a means to an end.” So we aren't thinking or creating art for the monetary value, we are creating because we are having fun and we love the art!
When considering a rationale for my project, I continue to think about how Sibley discusses art and play, I can't help but think that there will be a difference in art created for joy rather than art created out of requirement. I think there will be a noticeable difference for students and for my own big idea project here. When art becomes "work" a lot of people lose the joy in creating. I will be evaluating how mindset effects the final product.
This concept and the art piece that blog/artist walks through on her post reminded me a lot of Jackson Pollock, the American splash paint artist. I have created some pieces akin to Pollock in the past and think it would be fun to add in this element to this project. Using Pollock as inspiration, as a lot of his work reflects the idea of "play", hopefully those ideas will be easier to keep in mind throughout the process.
Jean-Michel Basquiat is another artist whom I believe embodies the idea of play in art. He creates pieces that are eclectic, colorful, and more abstract. He would be another great artist to reference throughout the process.
My process plan will include two pieces of art. I will create a piece of art that a friend "commissions". This piece will focus on detail, planning, and design based upon the request of the commission.
The second piece I will create will be a piece of art for FUN. This piece will focus on experimentation and play through multiple mediums.
I will continue planning through the stages and I can't wait to show you the finished results!
